During a recent visit to Israel, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio asserted that Iran is the primary instigator of instability and violence in the Middle East. In a joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Rubio emphasized the strong cooperation between the United States and Israel in countering Iran’s influence and preventing it from acquiring nuclear weapons. He stated, “Iran is behind everything that threatens peace and security in the Middle East.”
Netanyahu echoed Rubio’s sentiments, highlighting the collaborative efforts of both nations to thwart Iran’s regional ambitions. He noted that with the support of U.S. President Donald Trump, Israel is determined to “finish the job” against Iran, which he described as the foremost threat to regional stability.
The discussions also addressed the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Both leaders underscored the necessity of eradicating Hamas’s control over the territory to ensure lasting peace and security for Israel. Rubio and Netanyahu expressed their commitment to working closely on President Trump’s controversial plan for Gaza, which involves U.S. administration of the area and the relocation of its Palestinian residents—a proposal that has faced significant international criticism.
This visit marks Rubio’s first trip to the Middle East as Secretary of State, reflecting the administration’s focus on addressing perceived threats posed by Iran and reinforcing alliances with key regional partners.
