Islamabad, Pakistan – In a significant escalation of political unrest, Pakistani security forces clashed with supporters of former Prime Minister Imran Khan as they marched towards the capital, Islamabad, demanding his release from prison. The protests, which have been ongoing for several days, intensified on Monday night and Tuesday, leading to violent confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement agencies.
Protesters Defy Government Restrictions
Despite government-imposed restrictions, including roadblocks and a ban on public gatherings, thousands of Khan’s supporters attempted to enter Islamabad. Authorities responded with tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the crowds, resulting in numerous injuries on both sides. The protesters, many wearing protective gear, retaliated by throwing stones and setting fire to barricades. The clashes have led to significant disruptions in the capital, with major roads blocked and mobile internet services suspended in certain areas. The government has arrested over 4,000 supporters of Imran Khan, including five parliamentarians, ahead of the rally demanding his release.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi stated that while the government was open to allowing protests on the outskirts of the city, extreme measures would be taken if demonstrators entered Islamabad. The government asserts that only the courts can order Khan’s release and has warned that any attempts to create unrest will be dealt with strictly. In response to the protests, authorities have deployed additional security personnel and set up extensive roadblocks, turning Islamabad into what locals describe as “Containeristan” due to the widespread use of shipping containers to block roads.
