A Delta Air Lines regional jet flipped upside down upon landing at Toronto Pearson International Airport on Monday, February 17, 2025, injuring 18 of the 80 people on board. The flight, operated by Endeavor Air as Delta Connection Flight 4819, originated from Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport. Among the injured, three individuals, including a child, sustained critical but non-life-threatening injuries.
The aircraft, a Bombardier CRJ-900LR, was attempting to land at approximately 2:15 p.m. local time when it crashed, overturned, and came to rest upside down on the snow-covered runway. Passenger John Nelson described the landing as routine until the plane hit the ground “super hard,” skidded sideways, and then flipped over. He recounted a chaotic scene as passengers hung upside down, unbuckled themselves, and evacuated the aircraft.
Emergency responders, including six fire engines, a tanker, and 18 paramedic units, swiftly arrived at the scene. All passengers and crew were evacuated before the aircraft caught fire. Deborah Flint, CEO of the Greater Toronto Airports Authority, praised the quick actions of first responders, stating, “First and foremost, there was no loss of life, and this is due in part to our heroic and trained professionals.”
At the time of the incident, Toronto was experiencing strong winds following a recent snowstorm, with gusts reported up to 38 mph. The runway was dry, and there were no crosswind conditions reported during the landing attempt. The exact cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Transportation Safety Board of Canada, with assistance from the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board.
The airport temporarily suspended operations following the crash but resumed departures and arrivals later in the day. Passengers were provided support and reunited with their families as authorities continued to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident.
