Iran Condemns Israel’s Threat Against Passenger Plane, Urges Beirut to Remove Obstacles

February 14, 2025 – Iran has strongly condemned Israel’s alleged threat against an Iranian passenger plane, calling the move a “dangerous provocation” and urging Lebanese authorities to remove any obstacles hindering its safe passage.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry issued a statement on Wednesday denouncing Israel’s actions, stating that targeting civilian aircraft violates international law and endangers innocent lives.

“This is a blatant act of aggression and a serious threat to regional security,” the statement read. “The international community must hold Israel accountable for such reckless behavior.”

The condemnation follows reports that Israeli fighter jets had approached an Iranian Mahan Air flight near Lebanese airspace, sparking concerns over potential escalation between the two adversaries. Iranian officials have accused Israel of attempting to intimidate civilian aviation in the region.

Iran Pressures Beirut for Cooperation

Beyond condemning Israel, Tehran also urged the Lebanese government to remove what it described as “unnecessary obstacles” affecting the safe operation of Iranian flights. Iranian officials have not specified the nature of these obstacles but emphasized the need for smooth coordination with Beirut.

Lebanon, which has long been caught in geopolitical tensions involving Israel, Iran, and Hezbollah, has yet to formally respond to Tehran’s request. However, Lebanese security sources suggest that heightened regional tensions may be influencing aviation policies.

Israel’s Stance

Israeli officials have neither confirmed nor denied the alleged airspace encounter, but Tel Aviv has consistently expressed concerns over Mahan Air’s activities. The airline, which has been sanctioned by the U.S. and other Western nations, is accused of transporting weapons and military personnel for Iran’s elite forces.

A senior Israeli defense official, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated: “Israel will take all necessary measures to prevent hostile activities, including those disguised under civilian operations.”

Rising Tensions in the Region

This latest development adds to escalating tensions between Iran and Israel, particularly in light of recent clashes involving Hezbollah and Israeli forces along the Lebanese border.

Iran has vowed to take the matter to international aviation bodies, calling for a UN investigation into Israel’s “reckless” maneuvers. Meanwhile, regional players are closely watching whether Lebanon will comply with Iran’s demands or maintain a neutral stance.

With Middle Eastern tensions already at a boiling point, the incident has raised fears of further escalation, potentially affecting diplomatic efforts to stabilize the region.
